11 questions to FARMACIA [Argentinian band]
FARMACIA is Ariel Sima (electronics, programming, backing vocals & instruments), Diego Sima (vocals, graphics & instruments). The Argentinean band met in 2000 and released their first EP on their own label Discos Sordos. Following their debut “Musica Envasada” (2000) they released “Mal y bien a la vez” (2001), “13 Nebulizaciones” (2004) and “Nanas” (2005). Psych-O-Path Records (USA) has released an original cd called “Crucial Sky in the Land of Premonitions At Lorenzo´s Weekend” (2006). Farmacia “Nada de Nada” (2008) is a techno pop album. “Desorden obsesivo compulsive” Album (2011) and “Oveja Negra” (2014) Farmacia appears on the film “The paranoids”, Adam Yauch´s (Beastie Boys) company Oscilloscope Laboratories released the DVD.
Farmacia and their peers have created an energetic and vibrant electro music scene in Buenos Aires where they play various venues and festivals. They played at the BUE festival with bands like Massive Attack, Human League, Andy Fletcher Dj (DM). Farmacia appears with the track “Estas Técnicas” in the new compilation “Some Bizzare Double Album” (2008) on the legendary UK label Some Bizzare Records (Soft Cell, Einstürzende Neubauten, Cabaret Voltaire, Psychic Tv, Val Denham, DM, Coil, Marc Almond).
FARMACIA
I – Is there any particular reason behind the name FARMACIA?
Originalmente nos llamábamos “Tónico” luego decidimos cambiar el nombre a “Farmacia” por el año 99-2000 aproximadamente, nos parecía un nombre más fuerte. A partir de ahí usamos el neón como logo de la banda.
II – I have read in an online article, published by LA NACION, that “Desorden obsesivo compulsivo” album, released by Discos Sordos, has been sponsored by Organización de Farmacéuticos Iberolatinoamericanos (OFIL) Argentinian branch and Red Mexicana de Atención Farmacéutica (Redmaf). Is that true?
Sí es verdad, OFIL Argentina (Organización de Farmacéuticos Iberolatinoamericanos) fue sponsor en nuestro disco “Desorden obsesivo compulsivo” además hicimos un show en un evento privado, en un congreso organizado por ellos, a cada participante le regalaban en la entrada un cd de Farmacia.
La Red Mexicana de Atención Farmacéutica (Redmaf) también fue sponsor en el mismo cd, en varios eventos farmacéuticos en México pasaban nuestra música los djs y regalaban nuestro cd a los concurrentes.
En Marzo de 2016 ya está confirmado un congreso internacional farmacéutico en el Sheraton Hotel (Jalisco) donde también estará presente nuestra música.
III – Major Influences in Music, Literature, Cinema & Paintings?
Nuestra mayor influencia en música es todo el tecno pop europeo (Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Fad Gadget, Erasure, Human League, Pet Shop Boys, Yazoo, Yello, Daf, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Ultravox, Omd, Naked Lunch, Visage, etc, etc).
En literatura todo lo que tenga que ver con el rock e historia de bandas que nos gustan. Un libro: “Del industrial al tecnopop” de Adolfo Marín.
Ariel: fanático del cine en general, me gusta mucho ver películas por épocas, por géneros, por directores, no miro tv solo películas, y Diego: fanático de las 3 primeras Star Wars originales, Rocky IV.
En pintura nos fascina Val Denham.
IV – Composing Music:
– About your creative process.
– How do you describe the music you create?
El proceso creativo es de muchas formas, en una canción quizás primero viene la letra… después la música y en otros casos al revés, no hay una fórmula o una única manera, nos gusta sorprendernos a nosotros mismos como vamos creando lo que hacemos. Usamos todo tipo de instrumentos desde reales a virtuales.
Describimos a nuestra música como tecno pop experimental.
V – Can you describe us the electro [underground] music scene in Buenos Aires, your home town?
La escena es muy activa hay muchas bandas de distintos estilos para poder ir a eventos y ver shows. Recientemente tocamos en el Centro Cultural General San Martín en un evento de música electrónica.
VI – Our first contact was established earlier this year, after the release of “From Ritual to Romance” sampler, were you participate in a Val Denham’s music titled “Apollo”. Even earlier, in 2011, I was totally mesmerized by the track “As I Walked Out One Evening” by Val Denham and Farmacia, part of the album “Bluelands”:
– When did you start collaborating with Val?
– Some Bizarre Records: this is a legendary label. Can you describe us the process that lead to the inclusion of a Farmacia’s track in the compilation “Some Bizzare Double Album” (2008)?
Con Val Denham hicimos un montón de temas en conjunto. El primer tema “Signatures” fue para su disco Halved Man (2007) y de ahí no paramos y estamos en muchos discos. Nos encanta sus pinturas, su música, sus diseños para Some Bizzare (Marc and the Mambas) la compilación: If you can’t please yourself you can’t please your soul. El tema “As I Walked Out One Evening” tiene un video clip genial. En breve estaría saliendo un nuevo album de Val Denham y Farmacia colabora en 9 temas entre ellos “Apollo”. El álbum es fantástico.
Para nosotros haber colaborado en Some Bizzare fue como un sueño impensado hecho realidad. Admiramos a todos los artistas del sello: (Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Coil, Cabaret Voltaire, The The, Einsturzende Neubauten, Psychic TV).
En 2007 aproximadamente escribimos al sello preguntando acerca del album Some Bizarre 81… si se iba a reeditar y le pasamos el myspace de Farmacia para que escuchara nuestra música y nos contestó Stevo diciendo que se iba a reeditar en breve con la edición de un nuevo album llamado “Some Bizzare Double Album” (2008) y que quería incluir uno de los temas que estaba en nuestro myspace “Estas Técnicas”. El tema “Estas Técnicas” se encuentra originalmente en nuestro disco debut del año 2000 (Música envasada) editado por Discos Sordos.
VII – Unfortunately, I am not familiar with many Argentinian artists / musicians [Alan Courtis and Farmacia are the exceptions, I suppose]. Is there anyone else that you would recommend to European audiences?
Tenemos muchos conocidos en Argentina que hacen música, Alan Courtis nos conoce, participamos en algunas compilaciones donde él también participa, entre ellas un cd Tributo a Throbbing Gristle donde Farmacia realizó el tema “What a day”. Recomendamos ese cd. En 2009 tuvimos el honor de actuar en vivo con un miembro de la banda Reynols (Rob Conlazo), Fue un show especial en Yogesvara (instituto de yoga), siempre lo tenemos presente.
VIII – July 2015: You have participated in “MITRA – Music for Nepal” together with names such as: Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Dave Ball (Soft Cell), Wolfgang Flur (Kraftwerk), Steven Severin (Siouxsie & The Banshees), Jarboe, Phallus Dei, Amber Asylum, Anni Hogan, among others. What can you tells about this initiative?
Esta iniciativa fue por parte de Anni Hogan (Marc and the Mambas), somos amigos de Anni via facebook, un dia ella anunció que estaba seleccionando temas para hacer una compilación musical para ayudar a Nepal. Le enviamos algunos temas y eligió el tema “Deseo”. Un gran honor ser parte y poder ayudar a Nepal junto a artistas increíbles.
IX – You have working lately in a new album: can you reveal us any details?
Sí, estamos trabajando en un nuevo album de Farmacia, posiblemente salga en 2016, estamos terminando de grabarlo, pero no queremos adelantar demasiado, ya habrá novedades.
X – Did you ever consider playing in Europe?
Seria un sueño poder actuar en vivo en Europa, ojalá algún dia se dé y algún promotor nos quiera llevar.
XI – Any other projects for the near future?
