“It’s the instrumental studio backing track for the live favourite ‘Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil’, with Jhonn Balance’s studio vocal tracks from ‘Tunnel of Goats’ mixed into it. The last five minutes of this mix incorporates the great finale of the New York live version of ‘Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil’, with Jhonn’s “presence” felt at odd times throughout this long track too (the vocals featuring quite high up in this JB Birthday mix), along with very minor instrumental portions of the ‘Tunnel of Goats’ track/s to help expand some of the sound of the backing track from Coil’s dvd boxset ‘Colour Sound Oblivion’ Reconstruction Kit Disk #15.
“I have always loved the “Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil” album by Coil, and especially the intense live interpretations they did of “Higher Beings Command” and “The Green Child”, along with their own live-only amalgamation of the rest of the album, the track itself called “Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil”.
Well, we may not have the definitive studio version of that track, but I designed this mix to help remedy that (at least for my ears). Also, for those of you who find the actual album fairly impenetrable, this mix might be more palatable for you than the original gleefully-annihilating “Tunnel of Goats” sequence of split-channel tracks at least. This mix does not feature any live preamble, nor Jhonn’s shouted request for the live concert volume to be “louder Louder LOUDER”, though the whole track is designed to be played very loud on your hifi (with or without some beltane incense). As in the CSLTE live versions, the vocal section features (mainly) in the second quarter of the song.” – Phil Barrington
